DENTAL RESTORATIONS

Dental restorations are the different types of ways in which a damaged tooth can be repaired following fracture, deterioration or decay. The most common type of dental restoration are fillings.

What is a filling?

A filling is a direct tooth restoration that uses a composite resin material to repair the broken structure or missing part of the tooth back to its normal shape so that it can function as normal. A filling is done to replace the broken piece of the tooth or by removing the decayed part of the tooth. The missing structure is then replaced with a material that restores the tooth's function and strength, and prevents any bacteria from entering the tooth's structure. Composite resins can be made to match the colour of the existing tooth and increase the aesthetic appearance

Benefits of fillings:

  • Improve tooth functionality
  • Improve tooth structure
  • They can protect your tooth for years
  • Fillings can prevent infection

How would I know if I need a filling?

Generally, any chipped or broken teeth should be a reason for you to seek advice as these teeth need to be repaired to restore them back to normal and ensure no bacteria can accumulate inside the tooth. Dr Haripersad will also be able to check for cavities that need to be filled during your biannual check-up. If decay or a fracture has damaged a large portion of the tooth, a crown, or cap, may be recommended instead.
