ORAL SURGERY
While your dentist will aim to preserve your natural teeth as long as possible, for teeth that are severely damaged and diseased, extraction may be needed to enhance your oral health.
When is extraction needed?
A tooth may need to be extracted if it is diseased, damaged or has extensive decay. In some cases, teeth may need to be extracted if they have been involved in trauma or if there is crowding. Based on the visibility of the tooth above the gum line, the extractions may be simple or complex.
- Simple extraction
For teeth that are visible and accessible above the gum line, a simple extraction can be done in the dentist’s chair. Using local anaesthesia to make you comfortable, simple extractions are done by loosening the tooth with an elevator and extracting it with forceps. - Complex extraction
For teeth that are not visible above the gum line or are too damaged to grip, extraction is more complex and would require surgery. A surgical extraction is then done with an incision into the gum to remove the tooth. Surgical extractions can also be done in theatre or under conscious sedation. This is generally the procedure for wisdom teeth as they generally cause problems during eruption.
Can my dentist extract my wisdom teeth?
Yes, Dr Haripersad can remove any number of the four wisdom teeth should it be advised. An x-ray will be required to assess the status of your impacted wisdom teeth and if they are going to cause future problems such as pain and crowding, she may advise that you have one, two, or all four wisdom teeth removed. While the wisdom teeth can be surgically extracted by a maxillofacial surgeon in the hospital under anaesthesia, they can also be removed in your dentist's chair without the risks of anaesthesia. This option is also more cost-effective.
Laser Dentistry
Abnormal tissue connections in the mouth include lip, tongue and gum ties which limit movement of the lips, tongue and cheeks respectively. This can cause impaired speech in young children. With laser treatment, the tissues are completely removed with minimal or no bleeding. The benefit of this approach is that no stitches are required, and majority of the procedures can be performed in a matter of minutes.
Using the laser also reduces the risk of infection and may have an analgesic effect and boost wound healing. This will result in reduced pain compared to the conventional method of using surgical scissors.
