PROSTHODONTICS
Prosthodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the replacement of missing teeth with dental prosthetics and the associated soft and hard tissues that support the teeth. While the replacement of one or more teeth can restore your beautiful smile, it is not just done for cosmetic reasons. Missing teeth may cause problems with your bite, ability to chew and your facial structure, causing the face to sag. For teeth that are lost due to decay, trauma or extractions, artificial teeth such as dental implants, crowns, bridges, onlays, inlays and dentures may be designed, manufactured, and fitted to replace them.
Crowns
A crown, also known as a dental cap, replaces the entire visible surface of a tooth above the gum line. A crown may fit over a broken or cracked tooth with intact roots to reinforce it, improve the bite and restore the appearance of the tooth. It can also be attached to a dental implant. After a tooth has been prepared, or the dental implant is permanently placed in the jawbone, once placed on top, the crown replaces the visible surface of the tooth. Crowns can be fabricated of metal; porcelain fused to metal or all-ceramic (porcelain).
Bridges
Bridges are a type of dental restoration in which the neighbouring teeth are used to provide support for a false tooth to be placed in the gap of the missing tooth between them. In this way, the adjacent teeth are used as anchorage for the hanging of the bridge. A series of crowns are then linked together and created as a single unit which is then attached to the prepared abutment teeth on either side, replacing the missing tooth. Depending on the size of the gap, the aesthetics and function of the tooth, the design and type of material used to create a bridge may vary.
Inlays & Onlays
This dental restoring technique is the best option to fix minor damage to an otherwise healthy tooth. Inlays and onlays are also known as indirect fillings because they are fabricated indirectly in a dental laboratory before being fitted and bonded to damaged teeth. Inlays and onlays can be made from a tooth-coloured material such as ceramic, porcelain or composite to mimic a natural tooth colour and structure including the grooves found on the surface of a tooth. By bonding a pre-moulded filling that is fitted into the groove of the tooth (an inlay) or the cusp of the biting surface of the tooth perfectly (an onlay), the tooth is restored with a highly durable material, in a precise fit and is resistant to discolouration, unlike a traditional filling. With Dr Haripersad using CAD/CAM technology, these inlays and onlays can be fabricated in one appointment, without the wait.
Dentures
For those who are not candidates for dental implants, dentures remain a solution for missing teeth. There are many types of dentures including full, partial and implant-supported types made from acrylic or chrome. Dentures are generally made up of a flesh-coloured acrylic base that fits over your gums with prosthetic teeth to replicate natural teeth. They can improve the aesthetics of your smile as well as the functionality of your bite. With technological advancements, the dentures are custom made by a skilled dental technician working closely with Dr Haripersad to ensure they fit correctly and are manufactured to a high standard so that clicking, slipping and constant gum irritation does not occur.
When it comes to planning and carrying out a full-scale smile makeover or more complex restorations, Dr Haripersad will make use of a multidisciplinary team of dental professionals to achieve a beautiful, functional and healthy smile.
